In an interview Jim Shepard described Our Day of Grace as "...an epistolary story set at the very end of the American Civil War, involving an exchange of letters between a young Southern woman and her beau [Lucy and William], as well as another southern woman [Hattie] writing to a husband [C.W.] who never responds."
